ABOUT FIELD HOCKEY

Wilson’s Field Hockey team was founded in 2011, at the request of several Wilson students. Coach Sarah Whitener joined the team as assistant coach for its inaugural year, and became head coach in year 2, the same year that Coach Lorraine Lewis joined as goalie coach. As only one of two DC- based public schools with a field hockey, the Wilson field hockey team has had to cut its teeth by playing against well-established private school teams. Coaches Sarah and Lorraine, with the help from alumni of the Georgetown and AU field hockey teams, have grown the Wilson program, starting with playing against JV teams to now playing those private school varsity teams. Our players have been recruited to play in college at the DIII level, have enjoyed college club hockey, and have coached a high school team.

Sarah Whitener
Head Coach - Field Hockey
Sarah Whitener played field hockey at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. After college, she played on the Cleveland Women’s Field Hockey team, traveling to games in Buffalo and Detroit as she had done in high school. Her favorite position - a midfielder forever! Sarah coached youth soccer for nine seasons.
She became the assistant coach of the Wilson field hockey team in its inaugural 2011 season and became head coach the next year. Now in her ninth year with the team, she still gets a thrill from stepping on a field, watching a beautiful play, and working with the amazing students and staff at Wilson.
