ABOUT FIELD HOCKEY

logo

Wilson’s Field Hockey team was founded in 2011.  As only one of two DC- based public schools with a field hockey team, Wilson has had to cut its teeth by playing against well-established private school teams. Coaches Sarah and Lorraine, with the help from alumni of the Georgetown and AU field hockey teams, have grown the Wilson program.  Players have been recruited to play in college at the DIII level, participated in college club hockey, and have coached.

Sarah Whitener

Head Coach - Field Hockey

Sarah Whitener played field hockey at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. After college, she played on the Cleveland Women’s Field Hockey team, traveling to games in Buffalo and Detroit as she had done in high school. Her favorite position - a midfielder forever! Sarah coached youth soccer for nine seasons.

She became the assistant coach of the Wilson field hockey team in its inaugural 2011 season and became head coach the next year. Now in her 11th year with the team, she still gets a thrill from stepping on a field, watching a beautiful play, and working with the amazing students and staff at Wilson.

Lorraine played field hockey at Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, Ohio, specializing in goal. She excelled playing goalie for Yale University. She supports the Yale team today as President of the team’s alumnae association.

Lorraine recently returned to playing the sport as part of the USA Masters hockey program and as a member of the Washington Field Hockey Association.  In 2018 she was a USA goalie in a Masters World Cup tournament in Barcelona, Spain.  In 2019 she played in Belgium on a USA Masters team which earned a gold medal in the Trophy Division of the European Cup tournament. In 2022 she will play in the Masters Indoor World Cup tournament being held in Virginia Beach. Also in 2022 she will try out to return to the Masters World Cup tournament being held in Cape Town, South Africa.  This is Lorraine’s 10th year as Assistant and Goalie Coach for the team.

Patricia Nantume

Assistant Coach

Coach Patricia (Coach Pat, Coach Patty) joined the Wilson coaching staff for the 2021 season.  She played collegiately as a Defender at Sewanee. Patricia also played Attack at Ohio State where she captained and helped lead the Club A travel team to Nationals.

As a captain, she enjoyed the nuances of planning practices and leading conditioning sessions, which instilled a passion for coaching.

As the head coach for School Without Walls in 2014, she helped the team win their first game in program history (against Wilson).

Patricia enjoys working with all levels of players, and finds it rewarding to see players develop their skill and gain confidence on the field.

When not coaching, she plays in adult leagues with Colorado Field Hockey (Boulder, CO), WFHA and DC Dragons
