Dominican Republic Trip

The Most Important Week of the Year

History

1131

In the Spring of 2013, a group organized by Coach John McCarthy from Home Run Baseball Camp traveled to the Dominican town of Consuelo in what has become an annual visit hosted by the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and the Acta Kids Foundation. Among the youth on the trip that year, mostly ages 6 through 12, were also three Wilson Varsity players and the principal of Wilson High School, Pete Cahall. The trip was a tremendous success. Principal Cahall was the first to suggest the notion of bringing the Wilson Baseball program on the trip. Two years later that trip became a reality.

The Trip

The trip now in it's 6th year has grown to include 28 players and many parents. Each year the players have had the life changing opportunity to immerse themselves in the community in and around Consuelo. Service projects have been delivered at schools, orphanages and ball fields. Baseball has been played with kids in the community, against town teams on rustic batey diamonds and against MLB prospects at the Orioles Training facility in Boca Chica.

Service Projects & Charitable Donations

Each year the players involved deliver service projects in Consuelo and nearby towns. These efforts have included visits to Retirement Homes, Schools, Churches and in each of the last two years an Orphanage near Santo Domingo. In addition to putting in hard work on the trip, the players have been tasked with raising money to be delivered to the Gray Sisters of the Immaculate Conception who have been teaching, nursing, rescuing and agitating on behalf of the children of Consuelo for more than 50 years. In recent years our financial support has allowed two local girls to attend medical school - paying their tuition, transportation and meals.

Our Hosts

Along with the Sisters, we have also formed strong relationships with a long list of coaches. - almost too many to mention. Coaches Carrion, Luis, Jacoby, Julian, Tomas and so many others have made our trip absolutely unforgettable each year.
